“EKHE UDAGAN ABZHAA” (The Great Shaman Sister)

Bazar Baradin is one of the most prominent figures in the public, scientific and cultural life of Buryatia in the first third of the 20th century. His works for the theatre occupy a special place in his extensive legacy. Two plays by B. Baradin – “Shoyzhid” and “Ekhe Udagan Abzhaa”, dedicated to the most important events in the history of Buryatia, were unknown to the general public for many years. B. Baradin’s tragedy “Ekhe Udagan Abzhaa”, which tells about the dramatic events associated with the meeting of the Buryat delegation with Tsar Peter the Great in Moscow in 1703, became the literary basis for the opera “Ereekhen” (2023) by composer Bair Dondokov. The libretto of the opera, created by the composer himself, differs significantly from the original play by B. Baradin – in structure, volume of text, plot lines, which is due to the specifics of the opera genre. At the same time, the original language of B. Baradin’s play is preserved in the libretto text. The opera “Ereekhen”, staged at the Buryat State Opera and Ballet Theater as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Buryatia, became a significant event in social and cultural life, confirming the enduring significance of the literary heritage of B. Baradin, one of the founders of the Buryat autonomy.
