ON SOME ISSUES OF ETHNOGRAPHY AND HISTORY OF KHAMNIGAN

The article consists of two parts: the first part examines the first written information about the Khamnigans, dating back to 1636; it analyzes the data about the Khamnigan group led by Yelei; it suggests a possible meeting point between the Khamnigans and the Manchu-Mongolian detachment near the Unda River; and it presents the Solon legend about Lei-Mergen, whose name is very similar to Yelei. The second part focuses on the collection of donations among the Khamnigan people during the First World War, as well as the requisitioning of lamas and monks from six Khamnigan datsans for service in 1916–1917.
