OF THE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY:
EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING THE ETHNOGRAPHY AND GEOGRAPHY OF ETHNIC BURYATIA

The article is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the founding of the first scientific research institution in Siberia and the Far East – the East Siberian Department of the Russian Geographical Society. It presents an overview of the Department’s activities in studying the historical and cultural heritage, ethnography, and geography of ethnic Buryatia at various stages of its history: SBIRGS (1851–1877), ESBIRGS (1877–1917), ESBRGS (1917–1929), ESGS (1929–1931), ESBGS USSR (1947–1992), ESBRGS (1992–2009), IOO RGS (2009 – present).
